Herbert von Karajan, Music Director of the Berlin Philharmonic from 1956 until his death in 1989, is one of the pre-eminent musical figures of the century. He championed the use of video media and new audio
technologies in the service of timeless music. These are the performances as he wanted to present them-smooth, well thought-out, and note-perfect. As Gunter Hermann, Karajan's sound engineer of many years stated, Karajan was an aesthete of sound, who refused to accept any kind of obtrusiveness or exaggeration. And he had an exact idea of what he wanted. The Karjan Legacy film series documents many of these definitive performances, were directed by Karajan, and are among his only digital recordings.
