La riche famille Lelièvre, qui vit dans une demeure isolée en Bretagne, près de Saint-Malo, embauche une nouvelle bone, Sophie. Celle-ci devient vite amie avec Jeanne, une postière délurée et curieuse. Une fois découvert l'analphabétisme que Sophie cachait soigneusement, la tension monte. Associée à la hargne de la postière contre les Lelièvre, la blessure profonde de la bonne pourrait bien mener au drame.
