Passion or perversion...poetry or pornography? Satirical Italian director Marco Ferreri plunges into a gritty, hedonistic world in his Tales Of Ordinary Madness, based loosely on the life and novel of Los Angeles' most infamous poet, Charles Bukowski. This portrayal of a man who wrote with amazing beauty about living in the gutter won the San Sebastian Film Festival Grand prize and four Italian Academy Awards, including Best Director and Best Screenplay. The Hollywood Reporter called it a "cinematic walk on the wild side."
Gravelly voiced Ben Gazzara plays world-weary Charles Serking, a tormented and lost soul who wanders through Los Angeles' underworld indulging an insatiable appetite for sex, booze and poetry. Ferreri captures Hollywood at its crummiest - flophouses, cheaply built garden apartments and bars where prostitutes hang out. Serking falls desperately in love with a suicidal prostitute who mutilates her flesh whenever he expresses his feelings for her.
Perhaps most well-known for his outrageous La Grande Bouffe in which four men gorge themselves to death, Ferreri explores "the human appetite in all its savage absurdity" (Time magazine) and is well-known among film buffs for his abrasive humor, biting humanistic themes and anarchic poetic style. He shows a seemingly "normal" world that is, in fact, deeply marred and ever grotesque. His filmmaking approach offering prolific nudity and shocking images makes him the perfect choice for a film about the bohemian writer. "Ferreri's demonic energy serves Bukowski well...go along for the ride if you enjoy freaky side trips" (Bruce Williamson, Playboy).
