"Day of Wrath" (1943, 97 min.) - This harrowing account of individual helplessness in the face of growing social repression and paranoia was filmed during the Nazi occupation of Denmark. Anna, the young second wife of a well-respected but much older pastor, falls in love with his son when he returns to their small 17th-century village--and finds herself accused of witchcraft. "Ordet" (1955, 125 min.) - Young Thomas learns that he cannot marry Anna, the tailor's daughter, because of the intense religious differences between their fathers, complicated by the insanity of his brother Johannes. "Gertrud" (1965, 116 min.) - In the fast paced '60s, Dreyer constructed a patient, human meditation on romantic love in a series of long takes and self-consciously theatrical settings. Adapted from a play by Hjalmar Soderberg, "Gertrud" follows the title character as she searches for ideal love. "Carl Th.
