Pianist Glen Gould made his New York debut on January 11, 1955, and the next day signrd a recording contract with CBS Masterworks. His first recording- Bachs Goldberg Variations -took place that June. The record won instant acclaim, became a best seller, and launched Goulds career as an international artist. Gould went on to make over 60 recordings with CBS Masterworks/Sony Classical.Goulds concert career continued to grow during the early 1960s until, without any fanfare, he made his last public appearance as a pianist on April 10, 1964 in a Los Angeles recital. He felt that he could better serve music in a recording studio than in the concert hall.In 1981 Gould departedfrom his custom of not re-recording a work and, 26 years after his first recording of the Goldberg Variations, went into the same New York studio for his second recording of the work with which he had become so closely identified. Gould viewed the two interpretations as substantially different; he also wanted to re-record the Goldberg Variations using the new digital recording technologies that had just become available.French violinist and filmmaker Bruno Monsaigneon (director of prize-winning films about many of the great musicians of our time, including Nadia Boulanger, Yehudi Menuhin, Murray Perahia, Michael Tilson Thomas, and many others) was present with his cameras during these sessions, capturing a vivid and intimate portrait of one of the great artists of our time in the process of creating a landmark recording. This new recording won two Grammy Awards (including Best Classical Album), the Grand Prix du Disque Award, and a Canadian Juno for Best Classical Album of 19882. Glen Gould died in Toronto on October 4, 1982, after having suffered a stroke a few days after the release of this recording.
