SPRING SYMPHONY explores the love between the self-destructive musical genius Robert Schumann and the brilliant pianist Clara Wieck, a passion that Wiecks possessive father tried to destroy, ultimately forcing the lovers to sue him for permission to marry. Blending beautiful music with a compelling story in the tradition of Amadeus, SPRING SYMPHONY looks at the darker aspects of love and passion between men and women while exploring the creative process and inspiration that produces great works of art. Director Peter Schamoni won the Bavarian Film Award for his work on this film, which critics praised for its emotional depth and riveting acting performances. Nastassja Kinski (Tess, Cat People) mesmerizes as the child prodigy who falls in love with Schumann, convincingly protrayed by Herbert Grönemeyer (Das Boot). Rolf Hoppe (Mephisto) simmers with repressed emotion as the suffocating father, Friedrich Wieck who channels his own ambitions through his daughter. Spanning the landscapes of Europe from Leipzig to Paris, SRING SYMPHONY provides a unique view of the higly competitive, lucrative concert circuit of high-strung touring virtuosos and their exacting managers catering to the upper classes of the eartly 1800s. The art direction and costumes create a lushness that beautifully captures the glories of that rarefied 19th century world.
