Human Condition tells the story of Kaji, a civilian administrator with pacifist beliefs whose humane treatment of the mine workers he supervises and Allied prisoners-of-war angers the authorities. Kaji is eventually the victim of a plot by his superiors, who engineer an escape attempt that leads to the beheading of one of his trusted subordinates. Kaji is put on trial for treason and tortured, but ultimately he is acquitted and released, only to be drafted into the army...
