Its 1909 and a Yorkshire coal mine has just hired a new manager, Richard Sandman, to find a way to make it more profitable. Sandman notices that the pit ponies, with the exceptionof 14 year-oldFlash, are slow in hauling the coal. He decides that the ponies must be replaced with machinery. Two of the little boys who help tend to the horses in their underground stables, Dave and Tommy, ar concerned about what will happen to the horses once the machinery comes in. When they discover that the ponies are to be slaughtered, they ask Sandmans daughter, Alice, to help them stage a daring rescue and steal the ponies to save their lives.
