Thierry Fremaux, Director of the Institut Lumiere, edited this collection and may be heard commenting on the films (in French) on an alternate audio channel. The primary audio channel features narration in English by Bertrand Tavernier, who in addition to being one of Frances leading directors is also President of the Institut Lumiere and its most visible champion. To be escorted through this treasury of their 50-second films by Tavernier is to make contact first-hand with the freshness and wonder that still leap from so many of their frames, wrote Jay Carr in The Boston Globe, With love and humor, Tavernier demolishes the idea that the Lumiere films are primitive or antiquated. His refreshing thesis is that many of those early films were art - and can demonstrate it. A piano score by Stuard Oderman accompanies Taverniers narration and can be heard at full volume on another alternate audio channel.
