Three middle-class French drifters, each convinced they lack definition and excitement, try to find success of varying kinds in Paris. Their disappointments lead them to dream about an imaginary 'American Uncle', who could make their desires come true. Each crosses the path of Professor Henri Laborit, a behavioral scientist who instills in them a sense of wonder, excitement and a mystery of the unknown while comparing their behavior to his experimental lab rats.
