Two Movies - One DVD - Mega Destruction
In 1965, the company Daiei Motion Picture Co. was beginning to produce their share of sci-fi/horror/fantasy films. Daiei had caught the Godzilla craze and made their own monster flick about a giant, fire-breathing prehistoric turtle called Gamera. Shot in black and white, Daikaiju Gamera was a moderate success. American distribution company World Entertainment Corporation and Harris Associates, Inc. re-titled it to Gamera the Invincible, featured an English language track and newly filmed scenes with American performers Brian Donlevy and Albert Dekker.
When the film was a success for Daiei, the company produced six follow-ups that featured Gamera fighting various new adversaries. Even though the first Gamera film was released in American theatres, the sequels were only issued to television by American International Productions Television (A.I.P.-TV)-a subsidiary of the theatrical out-put of American International Pictures-and contained English dubbing done by Titan Productions. Out of the six sequels that were distributed, Destroy All Planets (Japanese title: Gamera Tai Uchu Kaiju Bairasu) and Attack of the Monsters (Japanese title: Gamera Tai Daiakuju Giron) are considered to be the most popular.
Destroy All Planets features Gamera battling it out with the outer space squid, Viras and saving two boy scouts that have been abducted by a Ping-Pong ball spaceship. But if you think Destroy All Planets was wild, wait until you see Attack Of the Monsters and how Gamera goes to a distant planet to fight the knife-headed monster Guiron, as well as saving two kids from some brain eating aliens!
Retromedia Entertainment has gone all out to present the original A.I.P.-TV release of Destroy All Planets and Attack Of the Monsters with the original Titan Productions English tracks. So, sit back and pretend you are a kid watching TV in the late 60s because its going to be a fun ride.-Christopher William Koenig
