Jim Braddock, a once-promising light heavyweight boxer is forced into retirement after a string of losses in the ring. As the nation enters the Great Depression, Braddock accepts a string of dead-end jobs to support his wife Mae and their children, never abandoning his dream to box again. A last minute cancellation finds Braddock back in the ring, seeking to provide for his family, even if it means going up against the heavyweight champion of the world.
