Guei, like many others, has made the journey from the country to the capital of China seeking a better life. He becomes a bicycle messenger, and finds a small place to live with the rest of the working class. He struggles everyday to make his living, knowing that the bike on loan to him will soon be his. When it is stolen one day, he becomes desperate to find it. Meanwhile, the bike itself has landed in the hands of Jian, a prep school student, who has wanted a bike to impress his friends and girlfriend. He has no concept of the importance of the bike which he now uses for popularity. When Guei finally finds his bike again, and the boy riding it, he makes a serious attempt to get it back.
