Returning from Hollywood to England in 1943, Alfred Hitchcock made two French-language propaganda films for the Ministry of Information. Though neither contains a cameo appearance by the director, these fascinating short films are full of Hitchcockian flourishes which - along with their inherent rarity - make them a key addition to any collection.
Bon Voyage (1944, French language with English Subtitles):
RAF Sergeant Dougall, freshly escaped from France, is debriefed by a Free French Deuxième Bureau officer in London. Dougall recounts how he - along with Stephan, a fellow escapee - contacted the resistance in Rheims, where he won the only available place in a plane pick-up. Dougall is surprised to find out that the officer is aware of a letter that Stephan has asked him to post in London. Bigger surprises are in store, however, when Dougall is told the full story.
Aventure Malgache (1944, French language with English Subtitles):
After Pétain's historic broadcast in June 1940, the citizens of Madagascar gather to offer resistance to the Germans, but Michel persuades them to await Pétain's orders. Clarus, an active resister, is betrayed and sentenced to life imprisonment. Michel - who is not what he seems - attempts to make a deal with him in order to discover the whereabouts of the resisters' transmitters and their code...
