Billy (Skeet Ulrich) and Buford (Gary Oldman) are sentenced to prison yet again. While awaiting the van to be taken to the penitentiary a fight breaks out and the prisoners make a run for it. Billy and Buford become separated for the first time in their lives. When Billy tries to hitch a ride from an obnoxious family on a road trip,
he ends up causing the car to get into an accident and just as the car is ready to explode he pulls the baby girl out from the burning wreck. Now with an orphaned baby in tow, Billy runs into a quirky waitress with a soft spot in her heart for the baby that helps him feed the baby and eventually find Buford again. Once again reunited the hapless trio make their way across America - avoiding the law, running into colorful characters, committing unsuccessful robberies and botching blackmail plans all in order to buy diapers and food for their newest little member. In the end the guys find a happy home for the baby, Billy find love and Buford finds religion - in a
Buddhist monaster in California.
