While stories about the battles of the Vietnam War are often told in film, GARDENS OF STONE looks at the lives of soldiers stationed Stateside during the conflict. The title refers to Arlington National Cemetery and its perfectly symmetrical lines of tombstones. The cemetery is tended by the "Old Guard," an elite group of decorated veterans who are no longer serving active duty.
Two of them, Sgt. Clell Hazzard (Caan, star of "The Godfather" and "Misery") and Sgt. Major "Goody" Nelson (Oscar winner Tommy Lee Jones, star of "Men in Black" and the upcoming "Men in Black II"), face an emotional battlefield when brash young recruit Jackie Willow (D.B. Sweeney of "Memphis Belle" and "Dinosaur") is assigned to their unit. The older men must help Jackie understand the harsh realities of war as he prepares to ship out to service in Vietnam, while both Jackie and Clell face the prospect of new romances.
