After the immense success of A Chinese Ghost Story, many films were made to capitalize on its popularity, including Golden Swallow, which lifts almost the exact same story as CGS and is considered one of the best of those inspired by it.
Lao is a scholar, who saves a golden swallow while en route to another town. While in town, he meets two Taoists who pester one another, and is attacked by a group of thugs. He is saved by a beautiful woman, and the two fall in love. But when Lao learns the truth - that this woman is a ghost who can transform into a golden swallow - their relationship twists down a tragic path. Lao also learns, much to his horror, that this ghost is under the spell of a demon who uses her to lure men to their deaths. Lao decides to save this ghost, and kill the demon which has enslaved her.
