The Ramallah Concert: On August 21, 2005, during the week of the Israeli withdrawal from the Gaza strip, a historical concert took place in the Palestinian part of Ramallah. Few would believe that this orchestra, led by Israeli conductor Daniel Barenboim, would succeed in performing in the West Bank. This was the first time that the orchestra gave a concert in one of its members' home countries. It was a standing-room only affair and the atmosphere was electric. The programme includes 'Mozart's Sinfonia Concertante in E flat major' and Beethoven's 'Symphony No.5'.
The West-Eastern Divan Orchestra is the brainchild of Barenboim and the late Palestinian-born intellectual Edward Said. They decided to collaborate in their efforts to share a message of peaceful co-existence in the Middle-East, including the creation of the Arab-Israeli youth orchestra, to help foster dialogue and reconciliation through music.
Knowledge is the Beginning: A powerful documentary about the West-Eastern Divan Orchestra, filmed over 6 years and includes footage of rehearsals and concerts in various countries, including the orchestra's first concert in an Arab country.
This is a re-edited and much longer version of a documentary released earlier this year, including footage of Daniel Barenboim controversially receiving the Wolf Prize from the Israeli parliament.
