1981, Maroc, le mois du Ramadan. Dans un village au coeur des montagnes de l’Atlas, Mehdi, un garçon de sept ans, s’installe avec sa mère Amina chez son grand-père Ahmed. Son père est en prison. Pour préserver l’enfant, Amina et Ahmed lui font croire que celui-ci est parti travailler en France. A l’école, Mehdi a le privilège (ou est-ce une malédiction?) de veiller sur la chaise de l’instituteur. Son rapport aux autres et au monde est construit autour de cet objet.
