Danny and Shirley are a young couple with a problem: it seems that Danny can't rise to the occasion, and Shirley's running out of patience. The mysterious Madame Heles is a necromancer who has the solution to their boudoir blahs a hands-on approach involving her two lovely assistants, the house stud, and some very special rituals. Once it's all over, Danny may just find out he had a big talent for pleasing Shirley all along!
Filmed in 1971 in less than a week with a 20 page script and a budget of $7,000, "Necromania" is one of the best known of Ed Wood's pornographic films. Two versions of the movie were produced, and two cameramen were used, since one of them refused to shoot any hardcore sex scenes. Both versions were later edited by Wood himself.
The plot involves a coven of witches, led by the mysterious Madame Heles, who concoct a series of "lessons" for a couple whose sex life is less than satisfying. Their teaching methods involve topless chanting, simulated intercourse with painted skulls, and a lot of oral sex. Madame Heles was to have been played by longtime Wood collaborator Maila "Vampira" Nurmi, who took one look at the script and withdrew herself from the production citing concerns of "professional suicide".
The softcore version of "Necromania" (or the "Hot" version, to use Wood's terminology), which has been circulating for years in various low-quality videotape editions, is no more explicit than other racy movies of its time, such as the films of Russ Meyer. But it's the hardcore (or "Hot! Hot! Hot!") version, released here in its entirety for the first time, which distinguishes "Necromania" not only from its contemporaries, but from the other skin flicks in Wood's ouevre.
This version includes more explicit footage, including one scene where one of the witches manages to magically bring her sex minion to orgasm with a minimum of effort (though the process is recorded by the camera in almost excruciating detail) and another which ranks up there with the graveyard sequences in "Plan 9 From Outer Space" as one of the most outstandingly bizarre in Wood's career: an extended hardcore scene which takes place in a coffin. Eros and thanatos are thus inextricably linked in "Necromania", providing a fitting coda to Ed Wood, Jr.'s singular career.
