Baby Face (1933) Barbara Stanwyck stars as Lily "Baby Face" Powers, a tough woman of unusual beauty who sleeps her way to the top of a banking empire, leaving a trail of broken hearts and marriages in her headstrong quest for fame and fortune.
Lily starts life working as a barmaid in her father's factory-town saloon, where she learns to handle herself around tough men. When her father dies, Baby Face takes her maid and moves to New York, where she marries young office boy Jimmy McCoy (Academy Award winner John Wayne), the first in a series of marriages and lovers that ends in control of Gotham Trust Company. Waterloo Bridge (1931) Academy Award winner Vivien Leigh stars as a ballet dancer who finds her greatest happiness and deepest sorry, her life and her death on London's Waterloo Bridge.
Returning from the front during World War II, Captain Roy Cronin (Robert Taylor) remembers the woman he loved. Myra Lester (Leigh--Gone With the Wind, A Streetcar Named Desire), a corps de ballet dancer stole the heart of the wealthy officer, and the two planned to marry. But when Myra misses a performance to say good-bye to Roy as he goes away to fight, she loses her job with the ballet. And then hearing that Roy has been killed in battle, Myra is left penniless and alone--and descends into a life depending on the kindness of gentlemen who frequent the bridge, a dependency that takes her self-respect and, ultimately, her life in this heart-wrenching romance. Red Headed Woman (1932) Seductive red-headed stenographer, achieves social recognition she desires after ruining lives and marriages of those who rejected her. Screenplay by Anita Loos. Watch for Charles Boyer in a bit role as Albert.
