Decades before the current film fad in CGI-buttressed comic book heroes like Spiderman and the Daredevil, Europe mined its own unique comics with a swinging 1960s style and glow. Most known, due to their cinematic representations, are Barbarella and Diabloik, but one should not forget Satanik, the female criminal with the tight costumes and seductive eyes. The character of Satanik developed an ever-provocative sexual openness. Outraging respectable society, these fumetti became popular with European youth and the lower classes. The first Satanik was a male, patterned after the already legendary Diablolik character and the newer Kriminal anti-hero created by writer Max Bunker and the artist Magus. When Satanik folded after 19 issues, Kriminal's Max Bunker (real name:Luciano Secchi) adopted the name for a new series in 1964, changing the character's gender and background. For Bunker, Satanik represented female emancipation and a woman's free expression. But the expression could be deadly, for Satanik was firmly in the fumetti Nero style: a woman of crime who would easily use her body or extreme violence to attain her needs. Polish-born Magda Konopka, a former model and future "Hammer Girl" (in When Dinosaurs Ruled the Earth), represented Satanik's cinematic incarnation. Piero Vivarelli directed, after having been in similar fumetti territory a year earlier with Mister X.
