Although it was panned by a number of critics when it first aired, it did not take Beverly Hillbillies long to become popular with the viewing public. Indeed, during its nine seasons (from 1962 to 1971) it topped the ratings for several seasons and also produced some of the highest viewing figures ever recorded. The basic background to the show was the discovery of oil on Jed Clampett s land which makes Jed a multi-millionaire overnight. Jed and his family move to Beverly Hills.
